Halifax Seed: Commercial

Canada’s oldest continuously operating family owned seed company.

Company Overview

Established in 1866, Halifax Seed Company Inc., is Canada’s oldest continuously operating family owned seed company. It has evolved to be a market leader in the horticultural and agriculture industry in Atlantic Canada.

Back in ’09, Norex designed and developed an e-commerce website for Halifax Seed, showing their full catalog of products and company info. In 2011, Halifax Seed came back to us, only this time they were looking for a member’s only site. This one would catalog their commercial products, sold to places like golf courses and landscaping firms.

Project Goals

To organise Halifax Seed’s commercial products and their complex relationships to one another in a way that can be easily accessed by users. The site also had to be useable from an admin standpoint, since managing the amount of relationships, categories, etc looked to be no easy task.

Services Provided

Even though eCommerce wasn’t needed this time round, a strong strategy was still essential. In order for the site to be user-friendly, it was crucial to map out exactly how it would look and act:

  • We heavily relied on Halifax Seed print catalogues since it mapped content and it was related.
  • Wireframes of the site’s navigation helped paint a clear picture of how it would behave in the user’s hands.
  • User testing on the site’s front and back ends provided valuable feedback, giving us an idea of possible problems once the site would go live.
  • Web Development
  • Frontend Database Design
  • Content Strategy
  • User Testing

The Result

Fast forward three months later: Halifax Seed was presented with a fully functioning commercial website. Tailored specifically for its audience, the site offers secure, reliable information displayed in easy-to-navigate product groups. And because of its clean, usable front and back end design, everything is dynamic and easy to find. the only downside for those hoping to catch a glimpse of the design may be out of luck, since the site is for members only.
